Hi All,
In searching for information on torpedo tubes I came across this site: [www.u534.coolfreepages.com]. It is about removing the torpedoes from U-534 and is well worth a look.
I came across a photo on this page that shows both sides of the “plate†or “piston†that fit between the inner torpedo tube door and the torpedo: [www.u534.coolfreepages.com]. It shows some groves in sides of the torpedo tube I hadn’t noticed before and it also shows what might be a handle screwed into the plate. I had only seen the “handle†screwed all of the way in and didn’t realize the shaft was so long. I guess we need to add another foot or so to the length of the torpedo tube to account for it if it was in this position when the torpedo was fired. You can see from the bottom photo that the torpedo fit deeper into the tube than I thought it did. It is a confusing photo as you can’t see the groves it fit into in that photo but they can be clearly seen in the bottom photo.
At any rate have a look at the whole series of photos. There are even some photos of some very strange looking torpedoes they found onboard and some good photos of detonators.
When Maciej and I discussed torpedo firing I hadn’t seen these photos and have just come across them.
Regards,
Ken Dunn
