you are right in many respects and I don't want to create another war of words. What I meant was, that I talked to many people here in the US and quiet a lot of them could not explain the term "Nazi". Most of them considered all of the German fighting force "Nazis", which is, as you know, far from the truth and this goes especially for the U-Boat force. Very few joined the National Socialist Party and these people were the real "Nazis".
As for Doenitz, he was a good leader for his U-Boat arm and a follower of Hitler and he knew more than he ever admitted to in the Nuremberg Trial, but one thing is for sure, according to my uncle, who served on U-48 and U-703, he was admired by most of his men.
