Among submariners, Miers VC was notorious for the routine machine gunning of survivors. He persisted with this, even after he had been warned to stop. But the powers that be still saw it fit to award him the VC.
One of his crewmembers (who recently died) once referred to him in conversation with me as a "murderous bastard". He suspected that revenge was the motive, after the blitz had claimed some of his (or his officers')families.
There is evil among men. Everywhere...
