My grandfather survived the wreck of HMHS Rohilla off Whitby N Yorkshire--I was told it was torpedoed by my mother. Lately one of my diver students said he had been told the same by his grandfather who was a friend of the Captain Nielsen.
The official story is that it hit Whitby rock in a gale ---but at the inquest no blame was attached to the Captain--which seems strange if it was an error in navigation.
Would Dr Niestle be able to track the ship's log of U9 as it sank HMS Hawke 15th Oct 1914 off Aberdeen (in Uboat.net). Rohilla was going from Edinburgh to Dunkirk.
U9's patrol was Peterhead to Essex--Whitby is half way.
As in Shadow Divers --I would like to correct history if possible and prove my granddad and the Captain were right.
I am a senior lecturer in underwater oilfield inspection, an Oceanographer who has dived around the World for over 50 years
many thanks
