He insisted on the Navy salute, and he even refused to dismiss Jewish officers from the Kriegsmarine. They were quite aloof from Hitler and the Nazi party; Hitler was qoted as saying \"On land I am a hero, at sea I am a coward.\" I think the portrayal on U-571 was in-accurate.
