This is the forum for Movie and Film discussions. Again, our topic is naval warfare in WWII for the most part.

<HTML>Good afternoon.
Personally,I have never seen U-571.Now I know many people will say don't coment on what you havn't seen, but I refuse to watch that film.
From what i've heard about it,Dietzsch put it most elequently in the last paragraph of his previous post. The capture of the Enigma was a great victory resulting in the saving of many lives.I think that it is disgusting that HMS Bulldog has been defamed in this way.I would like to get the surviving crew members in a room together, and have the director tell them why he thinks they did not capture the Enigma.
And from the reviews i've heard on this forum, what of poor Helmut Mohlmann. After all,was not the Captain of U-571 an evil nazi (whose parents it apears wern't married) whose hobby I hear was machine gunning sailors in the water?
There has,and always will be an argument of what is more important.Historical fact,or entertainment.I have seen directors in interviews trying to justify themselves by saying it's not a history lesson,it's a film.Unfortunatly it IS a history lesson,
many people these days are happy to accept what they see in a film as fact. For some,it's the only history lesson they have ever taken any notice of.I would not be suprised at all to hear that some school pupils have mentioned events depicted in U-571,as historical fact in their history exams.Nor would I be suprised if their history teachers awarded good grades.
When dealing with an audience like this, the film makers have a RESPONSABILITY
not to tamper with history. After all, there are plenty of true stories of great heroism just waiting to be told, that would give the viewer just as much excitment(if not more). It would be a refreshing change from the Americanised flag waving rubish that is presently produced.
Well i've had my little rant and I think i've sprained at least three fingers.
All the best.
Neil.
P.S.You may get the impression from the last paragraph that i'm anti American.I am most certainly not.Just anti American director. In fact......
Q-What do you call 100 American directors at the bottom of the sea?
A-A damn good start.</HTML>
