Good morning cate,

Thanks for the e-mail. No need to take the blame, Alas it was I who introduced the dreaded Dion, Homer, the Bushes etc into the debate, I can be a berk sometimes. Anyway, as to the Americans who attacked the subs during the rescue; I remember watching a Laconia documentary on the History Channel. In it they interviewed some of the U.S. airmen involved. They said they were just following orders. It also included brilliant interviews with survivors, including, if memory serves, a jewish doctor who vividly described what appeared to be the deliberate bombing of lifeboats by the americans. He was at a loss for words to describe Hartenstein's efforts to put to rights what he had done. Whenever U156 came across a lifeboat or another UBoat, he brought the woman who had lost her little girl to the conning tower, allowing her to look through his binocculars and signalling by megaphone to see if her daughter had been rescued, all in vain.
Maybe the History Channel have this available for purchase. If they do, it is well worth getting.
