Soundtrack, don't know, but don't they mention a Deanna Durban song in the book somewhere? That would be a starting point. And as an 'hommage' to Das Boot, how about 'J'attendrai', and maybe Lili Marlene in the German. And in English as well maybe, why not. Makes quite a good point about the similarity of young men under the uniform.
Briers, yes, duffle and senior service, the image gets clearer. Pity he's a bit too mature, as he has just the right quality of understated decency and affability for Valery. Martin Jarvis has it too, but he doesn't exactly look tubercular
I've left a message with the daughter of Penny Wilton who I know, who was in a sit com with him years ago. Long shot but maybe she would put me in touch if they get on still, or at least pass on the enquiry.
