Good Morning all,
I've just finished watching for the first time, Das Boot, the Directors Cut on DVD. While I enjoyed it and noted the 'improvements' I must say, my 'well thumbed' tapes of the original 6 episodes are far superior.
One thing I found absolutely incredible was the poor quality of the English subtitles. I speak passable German and I like to watch the movie in German with English subtitles (I found this a very good way to improve my German) It was extremely irritating to find for example, Ritter Kreuz translated as 'Medal' and most ridiculous and sloppy of all is U96 being described as a type SEVEN SEAS Uboat !! It is astonishing that the people who made a film which has become a legend in accuracy and attention to detail, could allow such elementary errors to get past them.
I have consigned the DVD's to a nice dust collecting shelf. My tapes will serve me well for a long time to come.
