Morning all,
Watched the DB DC last night. Decided to look at the director's commentary and I'm really sorry I did. Let me first say that Das Boot is the only movie I've ever seen that I truly BELIEVED ! The story, the acting, the direction etc etc was perfect. I remember watching it when it was shown for the first time on BBC all those years ago. The unfolding drama, the unbearable wait between episodes and then, THAT ending (I still find it painful to watch). The series was so successful that the day after it finished, the BBC flew Jurgen Prochnow to London for an interview. I was genuinly relieved to see he was still ALIVE!! That's how good he was,
The behind the scenes stuff that comes out of the director's commentary, (had I not copped on pretty early) could very easily have spoiled DB for me forever. I DON'T want to know that in some of my favourite moments in the film were achieved by dummies, or that the same boat was used in all the La Rochelle scenes etc. I wonder why people want to know this stuff. Why not accept the movie for what it is and leave it at that. It is somehow like ripping the throat out of a Lark to see what makes it sing. Just listen to the music and be grateful. So beware, all you Das Boot lovers, watch the director's commentary at your peril, it could ruin a great movie for you forever
