agree with you both on the poor quality of the DC subtitling. The german subtitles (presumably for native germans hard of hearing) are pretty poor too, in terms of matching up with the spoken german dialogue. i think you're right Barry, whoever subtitled the original mini series did a far better and more literal job. i'm not sure why a new subtitle translation was commissioned for the dc, unless that as new features like the dub and german subtitles were being added they thought the whole lot might as well be done again, and possibly the need was felt to render some of the dialogue 'milder' .
i would say in its defence though that even without all the clever 'technical improvements' (actually i rather like the original soundtrack - jerkier and grates on your nerves in key places better somehow) the dc is a vastly better than the earlier cinema cut, and it's maybe not fair to compare it with the mini series, with which it can't possibly compete on even terms for character development etc for reasons of sheer length
