<HTML>There is a rather amusing passage in Die Festung which describes a barely-usable U-Boot shooting down a plane and then picking up the uninjured flyer, who had bailed out. They bring him onto the (surfaced) boat, give him a shot of brandy and wrap him in a blanket. One of the crew members asks Buchheim to "Take my picture with the Tommy," as if he were a fisherman who'd just caught an especially big fish.
"I am not British," says the flyer, in English, "I am Canadian!"
The men are all amazed, as if they hadn't realized they were at war with Canada. One of them says "Can we keep him?" but another says "No, we have to give him to the Luftwaffe. We can only keep Navy men."
This passage reads for all the world as if these were little boys who'd picked up a stray puppy somewhere.
It's little scenes like this which make his books so memorable, I think; it isn't just bang-bang-you're-dead.
