Hello, U-223 was hunted and sunk near Palermo which is a way off from Capri. So perhaps your friend refers to another incident. HMS ULSTER detected the U-boat by ASDIC and although aircraft apparently participated in the subsequent hunt they do not appear to have played a major role. Can you provide more specifics about the time and coordinates of his attack? Best regards, Platon

Dear Francesco, Commander Linton was on his last patrol before returning to the United Kingdom. His initial orders gave him a very broad area to the southern approaches of Naples limited to the north by 40° latitude and to the east by the 13° Meridian. At his own request, he was allowed to expand his patrol by leaving the Naples area after the evening of 12 March and follow the Italian coast

Dear Francesco, Many thanks for the information on S. 4 and Amendolia. I should be ashamed of myself as I have your book "La Marina e l'8 Settembre". I have also "Siamo fieri di voi" by Capone, this is indeed an excellent book on Italian submarines in World War Two (is he related to C.F. Teodorico Capone ho was in charge of Gruppo Sommergibili Brindisi in June 1940?

Dear Francesco, Thank you very much for your information. I have no problem understanding your English and feel free to communicate with me in Italian as I understand it reasonably well. I am afraid that my written Italian is rather poor. I assume that Murzi whent on U-37 on the patrol of 24 September to 22 October 1940? Can you confirm this as I am guessing at this as his boat BAUSAN was re

Hello Francesco, Many thanks for the information. Did Longobardo or Murzi write any account of their experience? Can one find a file on this at the Ufficio Storico? As far as I know, following the patrol on U-99 Longobardo took over TORELLI from Aldo Cocchia while Murzi returned to his command of BAUSAN. Do you know if German officers assisted their Italian counterparts when the Italian Nav

Hello PatW, Many thanks. Yes indeed I have checked the KTB of U-99 and he boarded on 30 August, although there is no mention at all of any exchange between the two captains. The book "The Golden Horseshoe" gives more details of this. Best regards, Platon

Hello, I am interested in instances when Italian officers sailed as observers on U-boats during the war and also when German officers reciprocated by sailing on Italian submarines. Can anyone provide specifics (name of officers, submarines and patrols)? Thanks, Platon

Hello, At 2012/26 July 1943, HMS TROUBRIDGE carried out an attack on a suspected U-boat near Syracuse. Can anyone provide information on this attack? HMS OFFA and PETARD and the Polish PIORUN may have assisted. Thanks, Platon

Hello, I am curious about the circumstances of the loss of the two U-boats. U-561 was torpedoed by MTB 81 on 12 July and there were five survivors (including KL Henning). Were the survivors all picked up by Italian vessels or some were picked up by the MTBs? Can anyone provide a detailed account of the sinking of this U-boat? Which vessel(s) picked up the survivors? U-375 was in company du

Hello Adam, The attack you mentioned may be that on HM submarine SEAL which was about to make rendezvous with HM destroyer BOADICEA to escort her back to Portsmouth. She reported being attacked by a seaplane with three bombs. Time reported as 1035/7 and position approximately 52°00 N/02°05 E. Two other submarines were in the vicinity and also making rendezvous with BOADICEA: L.26 and CACHALO

Hello John and Roger, GNEISENAU was hit by three shells, one 15" and two 4.5". The 15" shell destroyed the main fire control station (6 killed, 9 wounded), the 4.5" shells hit "A" turret and the AA artillery on the port side aft. Platon

Attack on MAFALDA by CASABIANCA can be checked in her patrol report (item TTY 106 at Service Historique de la Marine, Vincennes). She was on a secret mission for the 2e Bureau. Two small Italian vessels were attacked with gunfire and sunk on 3 March 1943 by an unknown submarine near Cape Tindaro (Milazzo) and TURBULENT could well have been the culprit as this was within her patrol area but thi

There is no strong evidence that TURBULENT reached the Corsican coast and later the Sardinian coast. The attack on PRINCIPESSA MAFALDA and subsequent A/S hunt actually involved the French submarine CASABIANCA. TURBULENT was to have operated near Naples until PM/12 March, she was unlikely to have been off Corsica at the time. Since the sinking of SAN VINCENZO on 1 March, there was no attack that c

The U-boat was U-30 (Lemp) which dived immediately. I do not know the reason for the mishap as U-34 had been encountered just before without incident. U-30 had just been moved to a new billet and it is possible that HIPPER was unaware. U-32 was in German waters at the time. Platon Alexiades

H Terry, There is nothing really close to your coordinates but here are the closest if your radius of operation allows it: Coaster HOKUAN MARU I-GO (558 GRT) 07°14 N/99°14 E (TAURUS) Tug 07°15 N/99°18 E (TAURUS) Junk of 30-40 GRT 07°30.5 N/98°45 E (STURDY) Tug and Landing Craft 07°21 N/99°07 E (STURDY) 50 GRT Junk. 07°25 N/99°03 E (STURDY) TOSO MARU No.1 (292 GRT) 07°58 N/98°

Hi Terry, Are you interested only in the vessels sunk by THOROUGH? She was not the only submarine operating in this area. She sank two Chinese trading junks of about 60 GRT on 29.12.1944, one by gunfire the other by demolition charge, position: 08°10 N/98°14 E. This position may not reflect the actual positions of the wrecks as the vessels were trying to escape but are probably within 2-3 mi

Gentlemen, I suggest that the U-boat attacked by HERRING was probably U 66 (KL Markworth)returning to Lorient. She reported two depth charges at 0045/21 March near BF 8413 (position at midnight) or approximately 44°39 N /07°34 W (HERRING had reported firing two stern torpedoes and these were followed by two explosions at 0040/21 in 44°13 N/08°23 W). The positions do not quite match but err

Hello Brian, I do not think M-381 was sunk by VENTURER, at least not on the date you mentioned. The only target she attacked on this patrol was U-864 on 09.02.1945. Best wishes, Platon

Hello Ken, If you are looking for photographs of U-boats in France, you may try ECPDA (Etablissement de commnunication et de production audiovisuelle de la défense) They have a nice collection of German photographs seized during the German retreat from France. They are located in Paris at Fort d'Ivry (metro Mairie d'Ivry). I do not know if they will do any research for you. I

Hello Brian, I think your suggestion that this was attack was probably bogus is correct. I have not seen SOUTHAMPTON's patrol report but I have a friend in Barcelona who has studied closely the operations of the first days of the war and I have enlisted his help (he unfortunately is not linked to the Internet) but he has copies of the logs of SOUTHAMPTON and JERVIS for that particular day

Hello Michael, Do you have the position of these two attacks? Aircraft of 59 Squadron and 172 Squadron attacked a U-boat on that date about 170 miles NW of C. Ortegal and claimed it damaged. That is all I have. Best regards, Platon Alexiades
