15 Feb 1942. U-331 rescued five Italian airmen from a rubber dinghy in the Mediterranean Sea about 30 miles north-east of Sidi Barrani, Egypt at 2020hrs. They were from a Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 torpedo bomber (205a Squadriglia, Capitano Marino Marini) which was shot down in aerial combat with three Hurricane fighters (30 Sqn RAF) while attacking the returing Malta convoy MW-9 earlier that day. One crewman had been killed.
