The simple explanation of Joyce's nationality is that he was an American who lived abroad.
All of that Irish stuff was an attempt to muddy the waters at his trial.
In fact he had no affection for Ireland whatsoever. He came from Anglo Irish parentage. Father, Irish catholic Mother, English Protestant. Joyce himself was a staunch loyalist with sympathies similar to Ulster Orangeism in it's most extreme form. It was strongly rumoured in Galway that he was a police informer and that his execution had been ordered by Republicans when he left for England.From his point of view, not a minute too soon.
A very strange and complex man.
