Hi Denis
Thanks for the reply ,I saw two photo,s some years ago in a book or paper, one of
which was the captain and some of the crew in the conning tower and the other photo of the captain and a local dun laoghaire man.
It would be nice to have a copy of them so ill keep on searching.
Ilive in loughlinstown not far from dun laoghaire.
On 20th March 1943 the german U-boat U638 commanded by Kapitanlentuant
Heinrich Oscar Bembreck stopped the Irish Elm.
Rough seas prevented the Elms crew from pulling their rowboat along side the
submarine to present their papers.so the interview was conducted by shouting.
During the course of the conversation the Elms chief officer Patrick Hennessy gave his home address as dun laoghaire
Bembeck asked if the strike was still on in downeys pub in dun laoghaire.
The Downeys strike started in 1939 and lasted 14 years.
The captain of the Elms was from Belfast so Patrick Hennessy went instead of him
telling Bembeck that the captain was to old to travel in the rowingboat.
cheers for now
