<HTML>Guys,
I am touched by both your posts in defence of my own and also by the respect and courtesy you show to me. I don\'t think words accurately describe that but, well...thankyou. Too many of you to mention but you\'ll know who you are.
19 years ago today..... Every year I remember those who didn\'t come home - men I didn\'t really know that well - and think of how fortunate I was to walk away from it in one piece.

Fin, with all respect, I was caught up in that action. I didn\'t volunteer. I am not honourable nor brave. I did what I was trained to do, as did all those who fought in that campaign. If anything, I was scared - but the quality of the training I had carried me through. That and the inimitable \'British Bulldog\' spirit which makes the Brits about the best in what ever they do - no disrespect to anyone else, mind. (Maybe a touch of arrogance too!)
I think someone on here quoted a bootneck officer - that\'s Royal Marine to those who don\'t know the term - who said \'It\'s okay to die for Queen and Country - it\'s not okay to die for Maggie Thatcher\'. Let us not forget that it is politicians who start wars. Soldiers, sailors and airmen fight them. That\'s why I hate Mrs. Thatcher. She did it at the right time for her political career and when a general election was due in the UK. However, like most professional military people the world over, our opinions were voiced in private but we went, nonetheless. It\'s what you do. You follow orders.
The likes of Steve / Pat - whatever names they use - are not really an issue. I am pleased that there is a rallying group who come and help those of us who get on the sticky end of some jerk off\'s post. People like Captain Duffy, Fin too at times, attacked for no reason nor justification. We stick together and that\'s what counts.
Thanks all, guys. I really appreciate it.
On that note, I\'d like to close the thread on this subject. I appreciate and thank all those who responded - even those anonymous ejits whose contribution was valueless but who showed - perhaps without realising - that we are, on here, a supportive and friendly group. Our primary interest has been in U-boats, in sumarines and in the war at sea. It is also thanks to Gummi for not pulling the plug on what are, quite often, long and sometimes way off beam subjects.
This is a good place to be, with good people on it.
Thanks guys.
Aye,
John
