john, last things first! 35 meters isnt all that bad. you could last about 15 mins at that depth without decommpresion. the way to escape from a sunken u-boat, as taught in the kiel training tank, is to wait untill the air pressure inside the boat equals that of the surrounding water, then open the hatch and float to the surface using the well rehearsed escaped procedure. perhaps it sounds easy but i doubt it was. the good news for the crew of u-64 was that of those that went down with the boat 25 managed to reach the surface safely. unfortunately 8 crew didnt survive, either through being killed by the bomb blast or by the freezing water.it was lucky for schulz and his men that the incident was witnessed by german mountain troops as they went out in small boats and rescued the surfacing survivors. from then on schulz and his men adopted the eidelwiess as thier emblem. nice touch. regards, schalke.
