I bought what is called an MK9 submarine escape suit on ebay a few years ago. I bought it as a novelty and because I just wanted to see one in person. I have some pictures of its various parts and some pics of me wearing it which I added to my album check it out:

The suit was made of heavy plastic and had two hoods which went over your head. Apparently the top hood is meant to be torn off when you reach the surface. It had a pull cord on a tearaway seam to make that possible. The suit is double layered and is inflated with two mouth pieces on your right hand. The big yellow thing is a sort of one way valve which inflates a separate life preserver type chamber around your chest when blown into. There is a beacon light which is powered by some plates which react with seawater to produce electricity. The inner gloves are some kind of soft leather with outer mits attached for keeping hands warm. You are meant to have your ears lanced by the boats doctor before making your ascent in this rig. Which does not sound like fun to me! I found it was awkward and difficult to don it. The inner hood has a neoprene hood which zips around your face making it a dry suit.
