Hi,
Actually, U-701 lies at just about 105 feet, though I have read that at least one WWII era U-boat crewman survived a 240 foot escape ascent using Draeger equipment during the war (I forget from which boat). I have also read that the British Navy has been working on the deveopment of an escape suit with hood (possibly using mixed gas?) that in theory, could allow crewmen to escape from a bottomed sub down to 600 feet.
Regards,
Paul
