Sorry for the confusion about that statement. Ken is right I did mean :
"The short time spent at depth is supposed to minimize exposure to the possibility of the bends"
I don't know anything about the use of special gases to make the ascent safer. I suspect that they would not want to use such a system because of the extra space required for storing it. Those escape suits are packed into a bag so small that when you do finally get it back inside its bag the zipper is almost bursting. I don't know how many are kept on board but probably one for each crew member?
