<HTML>Hi Bill,
Cate has run this scene a zillion times, backing up and going over every little bit, to try to ascertain just who survives and who doesn't, and she's still in doubt as to whether the IWO, Bootsman, and a couple of others, actually make it or not. I can't tell at all. Definitely among the dead are the IIWO, Ullman, Johann, and the Bibelforscher. The LI definitely is still sitting up and looks whole at the end, as does Pilgrim, though Frenssen may be a goner. Can't tell if Hinrich makes it into the un-bombed part of the bunker or not.
For me, the moment when the IWO becomes sympathetic is when he asks the Captain whether they're going to make it or not; it's his moment of vulnerability, when he's no better than any other scared guy.
Jürgen Prochnow is, of course, forever the Captain of that U-Boat!
Regards,
Meg</HTML>
