<HTML>Dear Io,
The emblem was not the 3 x Schwarzer Kater. That was from the famous U-48 under commander KK Herbert Schulze, KK Rosing, KK Bleichrodt and other commanders.
U-953's emblem was a yellow shield with one black cat sitting on the bow of a surfacing sub, wearing a white captain's hat, a green boot on the right and a red boot on the left foot. Holding two whiskeybottles in the right paw and a revolver in the left paw.
This emblem was made in the time that U-953 was one of the Flak-boote.
The meaning of this was that only a drunken fool would shoot on airplanes with inadequate weapons.
The emblem is in Hogels, Embleme, Wappen Mailings deutscher U-Boote.(I too have no Umlaute on my computer)
By the way, Marbach devorced after the war from his first wife(who apparantly only loved him for his "Ritterkreuz" (Knightscross)
Kind regards
