<HTML>Many thanks for your reply Meg, more the type of response I was looking for.As it happens I read the book first and was absolutely enthtralled by it.You noted too his descriptions of the sea which I also found inspiring.
The book certainly is quite character driven and while there were shortcomings in their portrayal in the film there is nothing quite like seeing the boat in action on the screen.I have a keen intererest in militaria, my biggest love being submarines.Normally I don't enjoy war novels, usually sticking to factual accounts but Das Boot is one very notable exception. This is in part to it's foothold in actual events but it brings so much more to the table than many factual books ever can.
Bucheim has more time to develop mood, atmosphere, tension and of his characters thanks to the fact that he turned his work into a novel of sorts. That to me is what makes the book so special as it makes you see the war from a human perspective.I've often marvelled at the machines but having read Das Boot it's clear that what made these boats so deadly had a lot more to do with their crew than the penstrokes of any engineer.
I visited the U-534 in England last summer and it was an amazing feeling to walks it's deck as men like Bucheim did all those years ago. Great as Das Boot is there's never any substitute for the real thing.
The version I got was the directors cut so hopefully I've got the best one. Most people can't stomach sitting through all those 200 mins but it's different when you are into submarines. It's so good my eldest brother who lives on a diet of vampire movies declared it one of the best films he's ever seen.It has that effect on people.Just talkin about makes me want to watch it again so I'll leave it there for now and maybe next time I'll be able to offer a little more insight into it.
Thank you once again, always a pleasure to talk to polite like minded individuals.
Yours
