Diesels and electro. at the same time?

I saw a picture of a chart describing the different rpms for the diesel engines and the electromotors with the resulting speed at each rpm and it got me thinking.
This chart suggested that there was some reduction gears between the electromotor and the diesel engine since different rpms was stated for the same boat speed. I don't recall the right numbers right now but say that one of the highest rpm for the electromotor was 280 and the lowest for the diesel was 180 and both resulted in 7 knots. That would give that when running on flank speed with the diesels, say 480 rpm the electromotors would be spinning along with over 6-700 rpm's (again, I don't recall the exact numbers)
Now to the question, I have several times seen statements saying that when in a real emergency you could run both the diesels and electromotors at the same time to gain maybe 0.5-1 knot in top speed for a short time. But was that actually possible? Wouldn't you need a much higher voltage than was available from the batteries to run the electromotors at such a high rpm?
Just a thought.
