Hi Lief, maybe the chart gave surfaced speed for the diesels and submerged speed for the e-motors, It would make sense to require more power (RPM) to push the sub while in "dive" condition.
I asked in this forum about the shafting arrangement of a typical u-boat and there is: The diesel engine, a clutch, the e-motor/generator, another clutch and the tail (propeller) shaft. In surfaced condition with both clutches engaged, the diesel suplies power and control the speed of the shaft line, in case of a "double emergency" the electric motor only add about 400HP to the shaft, this would not increase the shaft RPM by much... 5 to 10 ??
As for the E-motor speed, assuming a compound motor heavy on the serie side, the motor field current is the main speed control, the lower it is, the faster the motor turns, load permitting.
