Hi Oscar,
First job for CAT is to get rid of the awful nickname for MAK (Mist aus Kiel = garbage from Kiel). This apparently came from a line of medium speed diesels shortly after the war, which were not too good.
Specs for 9cyl MAN for type IX:
4 cycle 9 cylinder in line type M9V 40/46 supercharged w. Buechi/BBC compressor driven by exhaust.
Max cont.rating 2200hp at 470rpm - consumpt.180gr/hp/hr
Max 2/24hrs 2350hp at 480rpm
Emergency max for 0.5/24hrs 2500hp at 490rpm
Do not have the corresponding numbers for type VII handy right now, but remember 6-cyl very similar with abt 10hp less ber cyl caused by less powerfull turbocharger. Neiter type had reduction gears.
As you can see, modern 4 cycl engines of comparable volume gain another 100+ hp per cyl or so. Rgds, RB
