Thanks for all your answers. I think it will be easier if I post specific questions separately.
Wiljan: U-864 was, I believe, the first time that a submerged submarine was sunk by another submerged submarine. It is probable that she was not helped by the noise of her Schnorkel.
Joe: Thanks for pointing out URSULA’s attack which was the first attack by a British submarine in World War Two. Note: that a U-35 had sailed with U-21, U-23 and U-31 and that U-23 reported also being missed by three torpedoes nearly half an hour later. It is possible that the time reported by U-23 is inaccurate and that torpedoes initially intended for U-35 also missed U-23 but we will never know for sure.
Herbert: yes, I have Clay Blair’s book which is a very good reference, I would also point out Wynn’s "U-boat Operations" and Hessler’s "U-Boat War in the Atlantic". There are plenty of good books but attacks that are missed are often overlooked, sometime because the submarine involved was not even aware of the attack.
