Dick O'Kane wrote that he considered TANG's "true" test depth to be 612 feet. At least, that was as deep as he ever took her intentionally. (Presumably, calculating that the 3/4-inch between the 600' mark and the pin was 12 feet.) They went deeper at one point, but he wasn't sure how deep it was. I seem to recall an engineering study that suggested a BALAO should have been safe from hull rupture down to at least 800 feet, and probably deeper. O'Kane's experience suggested that the vent risers might let go before that point, though.
