Rainer:
Operational depth was 412 feet for all BALAO-class fleet boats.
The torpedo tubes are tested for full submergence pressure at
412 feet. She was built at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in New
Hampshire, AND THEY BUILT THEM TOUGH.
I had dinner at Robert McAnelly's home last night. He's the fire-controlman who launched the 19" diameter "swim-out" MK 27
passive acoustic weapon. The CO was well aware of the risk of opening the muzzle door at 400 feet, and the After Torpedo Room watertight door was shut, as they all are at "Battle Stations Torpedo."
