Metox transmissions

<HTML>\">…later in the war the germans realized, that the metox was emitting waves that were used by allied airplanes to home in to the boat and drop a bomb blindly.<\" There is a rather long story behind this statement. A properly shielded Metox could not be detected by a radio receiver. This was tested at the time the Metox was adopted. However, this device was made in France and who is to say all of the production sets were properly shielded. Building a good RF shield around an HF device is not straightforward and it is easy to make it leaky if you want to.
Further, the British put out a rumor that they were tuning in on the Metox to discourage the U-boat crews from using it and to help hide ULTRA by putting the Germans on the wrong track.
I personally have a hard time believing many U-boats were sunk because of a leaky Metox.
BTW, Naxos was developed by the Luftwaffe to locate British bombers who were using SN2 radar as a tool to find their target. Naxos was in very short supply and very few U-boats got the sets.
