On many occasions the U-boat was actually inside the convoy lines (as with DN.21) and any boat turning lights on would not help the night vision of the escort\'s lookouts. Convoy DN.21 had a corvette in front and three old coal burning RN trawlers on the sides and rear. The low profile of the U-boat in the water made it very difficult to spot and Lassen remained on the surface observing the chaos that he had caused.
I don\'t disagree with what you are saying and as I am relativly new to this vast subject, I am gratefull to all of your comments.
