Ironically, having said that, I think the subtitling on the directors cut is rather poor, but as dubs go, it's rather good. Maybe this is something to do with the fact that the original german soundtrack was itself studio dubbed, as the technical aspects of the shooting, eg the noise of the gimbel, made it impossible to use the actual on set dialogue. Many of the original german cast did their own english dubbing too, which probably helped.
If you watch it in german with the german subtitling that's not very good, either, IMHO. It bugs me when the subtitles clearly don't match up with what is being said. Sometimes it's unavoidable, but when a verbatim rendition of the dialogue would be just as succinct why paraphrase?
