Dear FUBAR,
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
since I`m rather new on this forum, as a German I would like to pay the highest respect to all the Anglo-American and other authors who wrote about the book Das Boot plus the respective movie. They are all fair, very thoughtful and cover aspects a German would never think of, especially those writen by the ladies Cate and Charla. I have seen the long version of the movie very often, and sometimes I put in the video, make sure enough beer is available and sometimes turn off the sound to see if I still know the lines by heart. My Dutch grilfriend finds the movie very impressive so I can watch it in her company without mayor fusses.
If I may please I would like to add some personal experiences about the book and the movie.
My father, a marine surgeon, my mother a chief nurse, and my Godfather, an U-Boat Commander Topp, were stationed a.o.at St. Nazaire, German U-Boot-Base, in WWII and they all knew each other very well I was told. By the way in one of Bucheims books with all the fotos there is one picture with Bertel Endras standing up and my parents listening to some typ of comment made by somebody who is not in the picture.
I do remember vividly, when the old man read DAS BOOT he was muttering something like that the Bar Roayl scence did cover at best just a rather small aspect of their respective festivities when the guys were off duty. He got the book from his then wife for christmas 1973 and I happened to be invited to his house. He was not to be seen on christmas by his family before he finished the book. A mayor "Doghouse"-problem for him could be settled only on the second christmas-day. He was through with the book.
When I asked my mother about the bar royal episode, she just smiled and said, details my son are none of your business.
I read the book in 1974 for the first when I had my last officer on duty. Never was duty so short.
In reference to the Bar Royal in the book Das Boot, serving for twelfe years at the German Air Force with our American buddies, you all can be assured, we did not drink milk only when off duty nor were we just praying for a few nice "chicks" would show up at the place, where we tasted one of the most healthy foods on God's earth, German beer, and made sure the tasting-event was not just a sporadic exerise but and also to be accompanied by very intensive long lasting discussion, concerning THEMA No. 1. It might be possible though the longer the event lasted certain activities could then not be performed as intended at the beginning.
I guess in this aspect, soldiers of all natonallity are the same.
Sincerely Yours
Volker Erich Kummrow
