<HTML>For me, watching Das Boot reminds me of how my German comprehension skills have improved. I first had it on VHS, in German with Finnish subtitles. (I'm a native Finnish speaker)
I used to study German for years but it had got rusty so I could barely understand a word of what they said. I watched it a few times, started reading the book with a dictionary and started picking up words. Now I have a DVD version and I prefer to watch it without any subtitles at all, in German of course.
At least one thing that differs in the dubbed version and original in an important scene is where they finish off the burning tanker and then realize there are still people inside. In German der Alte only gives the engine order, in English he also adds "We can't take prisoners, you know that." (When the camera is not on him) Obviously meant as an explanation to the English speaking viewers who wouldn't have so readily understood that move.</HTML>
