Having just come from the cinema, I couldn't help but agree with you. It's not history, strictly speaking, but it's about 20,000 leagues better than U 571. Now t h a t was pathetic. Truly extraordinary performances by Neeson and some of the supporting cast, and Harrison Ford totally atypical as the Captain. Certainly worth watching on the big screen, although I plan to buy the video when it's released.
However, Spielberg should have forbidden Ms Bigelow to watch Das Boot before filming the outside shots of the submarine diving or ascending.
