<HTML>Les:
The K-81 has bounced around quite a bit......
For starters, click on: [www.warships1.com] Juliett name.htm.........
Scroll down to K.81 and read the notes in STATUS section. "renamed B.81" and
"(with fake hull number U.484)"
Now click: [www.fas.org]......
Do you see any numerals painted on the sail? Soviet/Russian submarines are
never designated as "U".
Now click: [www.warships1.com] Juliett specs.htm........You'll notice K-81 on the second line. (No U-484 is listed)
Now click: [www.warships1.com] Juliett history.htm........go to
page 4, and read note under "Final Disposition"
Now click: [www.fass.org] K-81
was a Project 651 (NATO designation - Juliett) diesel-powered missile submarine.
It was "Hollywoodized" to look like a Soviet nuclear-powered missile boat for the
sorry production "K-19: WIDOWMAKER." Like I mentioned before, all the diving or
surfacing scenes were accomplished by computer simulations; her diving days
were over the moment the two access "doors" (onee forward and one aft) were installed installed in Key West, FL before she was towed to St. Petersburg, FL.
I visited her ($8.00 a pop) when she was in St. Pete, and I never saw such a piece of junk. Very poor workmanship throughout the boat, but the U.S. Governmentt was still afraid of her type. She had to surface to launch her missiles, and was a
sitting duck to our radar.
I hate to burst your bubble about U.484; now you can do your homework and tell
those guys in Providence the "real storry."
Regards,
