This is the forum for Movie and Film discussions. Again, our topic is naval warfare in WWII for the most part.

<HTML>I saw it today, being aware of all the criticism. And when it said "Inspired by actual events" (not "based on") I thought it's will probably not be too historically accurate and watch for other things in it.
As a sub movie it's average, IMO. It did depict the mistakes and errors in the Soviet system rather clearly. I found it refreshing that everyone's private thoughts were kept a secret and you just saw what happened as any outsider observing the situation. It was also interesting to see Harrison Ford in an uncharacteristic role.
I think that the real problem when a person interested in subs watches a sub movie with an older sub in it, they immediately compare it to the Das Boot. It's very easy to see similarities if you look for them, consciously or unconsciously. Think about any action movie, for example. They're all full of similar scenes and cliches. So are romantic movies, movies about power games and what ever.
The thing with subs is that they provide a very specific enviroment which doesn't provide much variation if everything has to be technically correct.
I don't think that K-19 was pathetic, I could see the things they were trying to show in it, the badly working system where everyone tries to fit in, internal struggle in Ford's character and its resolve in a way. In the end the movie did make me think (and I suppose that was the intended purpose) about what do power, values, individualism vs collective good really mean.
But a realistic and technically correct description of a submarine patrol it was not.</HTML>
