<HTML>Hi David,
Well, I confess that I read fiction all the time, but well-written factual material--or artistically shaped "fact," approaching Truth with a capital T (which in my opinion is what LGB's work does) transcends literature--it's like living another person's life alongside him or her, in the particular time and place of which s/he writes, and that approaches the realm of magic (if I may be so corny in my terminology) thereby making it irresistible. I won't bore you with an exegesis of theory on the intersection of fact and literary truth, but in a way that's what everyone who studied WW II is after--the "real" story, whatever one's own personal view of "reality" may be.
Pompously and breathlessly yours,
Meg</HTML>
