<HTML>Hello Meg,
No, I think that by the time we stopped the Japanese on the Kokoda Track, probably some 40 miles from Port Moresby, we were pretty knackered (exhausted). Militia fought them too.
The American troops and marines and pilots, sailors etc landed on the coasts then beat them back to Tokyo with a bit of help from us and the Brits. America saved Australia and the only problem we had with Uncle Sam was fights over our girls .. including the amazing Battle of Brisbane . . . . after one Yank told an Aussie soldier in a public toilet in Brisbane what a great time they were having with our ladies. Brawls went for days over Brisbane. No doubt America saved Australia from Japanese domination if not invasion. Since then Australia fought with the US in Korea and Vietnam and sent units to both Iraq wars . . . however not to The Falklands with Britain, even though New Zealand sent a frigate. But since WWII and Korea the clarity of purpose has not been there. -- eg, Britain fought in Korea but not Vietnam. The US stopped Britain and France occupying Suez in 1956.
All the best to your family vets.
