Decommissioned on 17 April 1944 and used as instructional boat.

Scuttled on 5 May 1945 in Kupfermühlen Bay near Flensburg. Wreck still present in June 1993.

Attacks on this boat and other events

17 Sep 1939
Following her sinking the British aircraft carrier HMS Courageous, British destroyers pursued U-29 for four hours, until they ran out of depth charges. The boat escaped with minor damage. (Sources: Blair, vol 1, page 90)
