<HTML>Ying - I knew it !
Another posting that needs some research and should open another lengthy discussion.
Yes some other U-boat commanders who served in the Kriegsmarine were
Rolf Carls Crew 03 - U 9 / U 114 became Generaladmiral.
Werner Fuerbringer C 07 UB 2 / UB39 etc became Kontreadmiral.
Carl-Siegfried Ritter v. George C 05 (plm & knighted by the Kaiser) U 4 / U 57 / U 101
became F.Kapt.z.V
Wilhelm Marschall C 06 (plm) UC 74 / UB105 became Generaladmiral.
Hellmut v. Ruckteschell C 09 U 3 / UB 34 / U 54 became Kapt.z.S.d.R and also commanded (rather infamously) the HSK WIDDER & MICHEL. Her Capt Duffy can tell more.
Claus Ruecker C 01 U 34 / U 103 became F.Kapt.z.V
Perhaps in the case of the \"Lion of Lorient\" he was sometimes in the right place at the right time but it must also be remembered that whilst not anyway near being an \"ace\" in terms of successes he was a brilliant tactician and stratagist in the realm of U-boat warfare. He first had the idea of U-boats working together to attack convoys. I think Ted summed it up rather well and History has proved that he was probably the best man to command the U-boats in the 2nd WW.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck

Oh yes, I wonder what the next posting will be about ? :-))
