I really think the german Kriegsmarine had never a chance to win this part of the war. Especially the subs were too old in a technical sight. Untill type XXI came up
these subs were not really new. Most of them were nearly status WW I. Even the (very irreal) scenery of more then 300 subs in the beginnig of the war means 300 more or less OLD u-boats.
I think Doenitz knew this facts exactly.
