In chapter XXXV, The Last Mission (Hopkins & Roosevelt), during talks between Hopkins and Stalin, Hopkins said that "he hoped that the Russians might find the corpse of Hitler." Stalin replied that "in his view, Hitler had not died and that the Germans had submarines with long-range believed that Hitler escaped in one of them." Hopkins said knowing the case of these submarines, but had not yet found (the meetings began on May 26, 1945 in Moscow). By that time, Stalin believed that the submarines were on their way toward Japan.
In Potsdam, after the arrival of U-530 in Mar del Plata (Argentina), Stalin said James Byrnes (Secretary of State) that "we now know that Hitler fled to Spain or Argentina." Byrnes then ordered extensive research in this regard. (See James Byrnes "Speking Frankly.")
