Dear Paul
"Ultramar" was published in 2002 and so has information only to that point.
The Norwegian interest was: Professor Frederik Soreide and scientists of Norwegian Inst. of Submarine Archaeology: Faculty of Marine Technology of Oslo and Museum of Maritime Hydrology of Trondheim. In 1998 they had surveyed Caleta de los Loros by sonar.
Terry Neilson told me that on the basis of the naval signal, Soreide had given him the exact coordinates to search in the southern end of BahÃa San MatÃas. He sailed down there and found the spot straight away and got his sonar photographs. This was why he was absolutely certain the boat was there. The finance came in part from the Albenga Foundation.
The type of search mounted in the past by ArgNavy is typified by their expedition of Nov/Dec 1997 off Caleta de los Loros when they sent:
-Yacht ARA Gurruchaga from the minesweeping division. Apart from usual crew and a team of tactical divers the boat was equipped with robot video.
-Gruman tracker aircraft from the anti-submarine flotilla equipped with magnetic anomaly detectors.
-Neptune aircraft equipped with magnetometers for detecting submarines.
Scientists from the Institute of Marine Biology and Fishing.
Terry Neilson stated that the ArgNavy had checked his findings and they were certain there was a sunken submarine in that position.
When he told me about the project I thought at once that the gold was not the most important thing aboard the boat for the German remnants in this country but the weapons materials and documentation, and they would do everything to protect it. That is why I believe that the boat was probably shifted by the ArgNavy.
