Dear Peter,
one silently floating sub is like a sitting duck. It could be strafed with "cheaper" conventional ammunitions.
The "problem" is that after conceiving "their" homing torpedos, the Germans did not figure out that doubling the homing devices and arranging them cross-like, they could have an homing torpedo with the ability to search the target on both horizontal AND vertical directions. And when somebody made it with light alloys, he could carry two on a conventional bomber.
