Yes, but the theoretical remark is correct..
Consequently, if a boat could dive fast enough to some somewhat safe depth before a FIDO is dropped and then just sit around not using its engines at all, it might have had a tiny chance. The case of I-52 comes to mind. Of course, in reality, if I-52 had done that (assuming that keeping the desired depth was possible without using engines, which in turn is very unlikely), the FIDO would not have been dropped until I-52 had tried to sneak away some time later.
IIRC, another alternative course of action (equally utterly impractical in real life, of course) would have been to stay on the surface and go to flank speed because FIDO's top speed was considerably less than that of a surfaced U boat.
This in turn suggests something that may actually have been somewhat practical if the U-boat would have been a XXI one with sufficiently charged batteries: dive and go to flank speed (or any speed larger than FIDO's 12 knots). Since FIDO only lasted 15 minutes, this is pretty easy to do.
