Isn't this forum great! I know that the U-boat would be a sitting duck on the surface but...
Not sure of how many were sunk by FIDO but I reckon staying on the surface and shooting it out with Wilcats would be better than certain death below.
I think that for every Avenger there would be two Wildcats in the air. As far as I know (might be wrong) the Wilcats could not sink a U-boat on their own (their task was to force the U-boat to dive so the Avenger could sort it out) as they were not in the early stages fitted with rockets.
Perhaps weathering the storm would have been better!
This is all theoretical as support was never far away and as soon as the U-boat dived FIDO would visit so they were screwed anyway. I think the fact that they did not know is the underlying factor.
