Hi MCE,
Above remarks on the XXI type got me thinking, that the Fido would have a reasonable chance against these boats for the foll. reasons:
1) On patrol likely detection would be while snorkelling. Boat close to being blind. Threat detection basically limited to radar warn ant. mounted on snorkel.
2) If snorkel was seen by pilot, it's a dead duck. With Fido in water close to the boat (going 6-9kn), it will be a kill. Diesels will render sound gear useless. So, as with other types, they will never know what hit them.
3) If found by radar with the boat's threat receiver going off. Only chance, immediately stop snorkelling, accelerate and go deep before plane is in position to release Fido. Disadvantage:
This can "starve" a boat needing re-charging of batts.
