If the U-boat stayed on the surface, the Grumman "Wildcat" fighters would have strafed it with its four or six heavy machine guns (.50 calliber) and you know
what would happen to their "thin-skinned" ballast tanks. The "Wildcats" were often
effective at subduing the U-boat's flak battery, so that the "Fido"-carrying "Avengers" could more safely make their attacks.
Incidentally, the MK 24 (mine) acoustic-homing torpedo called "Fido" was issued to the Navy after only 17 months from its conception.
